When it comes to websites getting ranked highly among the search engines, SEO (search engine optimisation) is very important. You may have heard of a term known as the ‘long tail search’ when you have been researching SEO. This is a term which you should try to get your head round if you want to get the most from SEO.

Chris Anderson first brought the term ‘long tail search’ to our attention in one of his Wired articles. The article in question was referring to the fact that items which are not considered to be traditional ‘best sellers’ are still making a lot of money for places such as Amazon; the term long tail search was not referring to SEO in this instance. The words ‘long tail’ comes from the shape of a graph which is used to demonstrate how things are sold online. The best sellers are seen at a peak on the graph and then all other items show a long tail. The items which are not as popular are shown all along this long tail. And the fact that most of the sales are along the tail rather than on the peak was the point that Anderson was trying to make. It proves that when it comes to selling items, business such as Amazon can make more profit from selling less popular items than the popular ones.
When it comes to SEO and the long tail search it has been used to describe how some people act when they are browsing the web. A lot of items that are searched on the internet are done so with some popular keywords. But just like Amazon sales most of the keywords used are not the most popular but those in the long tail. So for those wanting to make sure that their website is as SEO friendly as it can be, they will have to also take into account the less popular keywords. For instance if you had a website that sold women’s handbags, it would be worthwhile to pay attention to more than just the keyword ‘women’s handbags’.
